March is Disability Awareness Month, a time to celebrate inclusion, promote accessibility, and reflect on ways we can create a more welcoming community for all. Residents of, and visitors to, Hamilton County are uniquely positioned to lead by example—whether as elected officials, business leaders, nonprofit professionals, educators, or engaged community members.
Here are a few ways each of us can make a meaningful impact this month:
Turn on Closed Captions in Your Business or Workplace
If your business or organization has screens in a public space—whether a restaurant, waiting room, or office lobby—consider enabling closed captions. Providing captions ensures that individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing can fully engage with video content. Not sure how? Hamilton County Tourism provides a helpful guide on why and how to activate captions: Closed Captioning Resource.
Attend Local Events Supporting Disability Awareness
Each community within Hamilton County is hosting events throughout the month to celebrate and support individuals with disabilities. Whether it’s a community discussion, an arts performance, or a volunteer opportunity, attending or promoting these events helps build awareness and fosters inclusion. Explore the full list of local Disability Awareness Month events here: March Events for Disability Awareness.
Follow the “Know Before You Go” Blog for Accessibility Insights
Accessibility advocate and Hamilton County local, Amy Shinneman, shares firsthand insights on accessible experiences across the county through her Know Before You Go blog series. This resource is invaluable for those looking to better understand accessibility in our community—and for business owners seeking to improve their spaces. Use Your Leadership to Drive Change
We all have the influence to shape policies, initiatives, and workplace cultures that prioritize accessibility. This could mean evaluating accessibility in your organization, considering inclusive hiring practices, or advocating for accessible infrastructure in your community.
By taking even small steps—like turning on closed captions, attending an event, or amplifying the voices of disability advocates—you contribute to a more welcoming Hamilton County. Let’s use our leadership to inspire positive change this March and beyond!
