As we reach peak summertime in Hamilton County, there is no better time to experience all the outdoor adventures that our community has to offer. I’ve spent almost my entire life in Hamilton County, and no matter what stage of your life you are in, there is a way to experience the great outdoors here at home.

Here are 8 unique ways you can get outside and explore the county as we move into the second half of summer:

Bike, Shop, & Dine along the Nickel Plate Trail

The Nickel Plate Trail is my favorite way to get outdoors in my hometown of Fishers. I’ve spent hours walking, running, and biking along this paved trail, which extends north into Noblesville and features some stunning views of the surrounding woods and White River. You could spend an entire afternoon bicycling, shopping, and dining along this 9.2-mile trail. My favorite stops near the trail include Four Day Ray Brewing, Java House, and Niyyah Coffee in Fishers, and Rosie’s Place, Chapter Book Lounge, and Grindstone Public House in Noblesville.

Forest Therapy

Looking for a way to destress and refocus? Forest therapy, also known as forest bathing, is the practice of slowly meandering in natural spaces and using your senses to connect with nature. Conner Prairie recently launched forest bathing programming on the Trails at Conner Prairie, the first designated Forest Therapy Trail in Indiana. Guided sessions and self-guided sessions are available. Fishers Parks also offers forest bathing programs throughout the summer at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve.

Nickel Plate Express Rail Bikes

Enjoy a unique outdoor experience with a rail bike ride along the scenic Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad. Soak up the woodlands and farmland of Northern Hamilton County while you pedal along with family and friends. From the White River Family Cruise to Whiskey Run Thursdays and the Twilight Rail Ride, there are a variety of experiences to choose from.

Cool Creek Campfires

What’s more quintessentially summer than hanging around the campfire, roasting marshmallows and listening to stories? Cool Creek Park in Carmel offers a free family-friendly campfire series on Wednesday nights throughout the summer featuring wildlife demos, music, and of course, smores!

Conner Prairie

Conner Prairie is one of my favorite places in all of Hamilton County. Not only does my family love visiting Prairie Town and Treetop Outpost, but there are also so many special events throughout the summer. Sip on an artisanal cocktail as you immerse yourself in the beauty of the sunflower fields with Golden Hour Gatherings, enjoy the sounds of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra with Symphony on the Prairie, and watch balloons take flight with the annual Jupiter Flights Balloon Festival.

Strawtown Koteewi Park

Nothing says outdoor adventure like this 800-acre park offerings ziplines and treetop courses, horseback riding, archery, 9+ hiking trails, and more. You can also visit the Taylor Center of Natural History to learn more about the archaeological discoveries uncovered at the park, and step back in time at Koteewi Trace, a replicated Native American village site.

Paddle or Float on the White River

Experience the beauty of one of the county’s greatest natural assets with an adventure on the White River. The family-owned White River Canoe Company in Noblesville offers canoes, kayaks, and tubes rentals for your trip on the water.

Outdoor Festivals

Summer is the ultimate event season in Hamilton County. Hamilton County Tourism has a great event calendar featuring all your must-do summer events. Upcoming events include the Fishers Lū’au at Geist Waterfront Park on August 2, Artomobilia in the Carmel Arts & Design District on September 6, and Noblesville Street Dance coming up Saturday, July 19.

With so much to experience this summer, how will you enjoy the great outdoors in Hamilton County?
