Last week, members of the Hamilton County Leadership Academy Class of 2026 gathered for Workforce and Economic Development Day at Abbott Laboratories, a fitting venue that perfectly highlights the strength and promise of our community. As we stepped inside Abbott’s state-of-the-art facility, it was immediately clear how their presence has elevated Westfield and Hamilton County, providing not just jobs, but a sense of pride and innovation that ripples throughout the region.

Abbott Laboratories has become more than just a major employer; it’s a catalyst for positive growth. Their investment in Westfield has led to new opportunities, strengthened our local economy, and underscored the county’s reputation as a great place to live and work. The collaboration between Abbott and our community speaks volumes about what’s possible when business and local leadership are truly aligned in their vision for progress.

One of the day’s standout moments was Invest Hamilton County President and CEO Mike Thibideau’s presentation on local demographics and workforce trends. His data-driven approach revealed some eye-opening statistics about Hamilton County—numbers that, thankfully, are as encouraging as they are informative. From population growth to workforce participation rates, Mike’s insights painted a picture of a community that is thriving, adapting, and poised for future success. It was a reminder of how important it is to stay informed, and how data can help guide our decisions as leaders.

As we reflected on the day’s discussions, a recurring theme emerged: the importance of standing out by going against the grain. In a world that’s rapidly changing, it’s tempting to chase every new trend, but true progress comes from focusing on a few core values that make our community unique. Whether it’s prioritizing collaboration, embracing innovation, or supporting entrepreneurship, holding fast to these priorities ensures that our development benefits everyone.

Despite all the changes in workforce and economic development over the last two decades, Hamilton County’s business-friendly environment remains remarkably consistent. Growing up in this community, I can attest that the changes that have taken place over the last 20 years are staunch. Yet our community still welcomes new ideas and supports growth, just as it had all those years ago. As we look ahead, let’s celebrate the progress we’ve made while staying true to the values that brought us here—a formula for continued success in the years to come.
